The keynote would lift the veil on four smartphones, the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max as well as a new one, the iPhone 17 Air . The latter would replace the Plus model. The iPhone 17 Air would stand out for its extreme thinness. Unfortunately for them, Chinese users may not be able to take advantage of it.

Will Chinese consumers be deprived of the iPhone 17 Air because of the eSIM?

The Information reveals several interesting tidbits about the iPhone 17 Air. The media outlet reveals that Apple's particularly thin smartphone will not have a physical SIM card slot. As Apple points out on its official website, eSIM is not available on iPhones in mainland China. This decision, likely made to free up some space, could therefore impact sales of the iPhone 17 Air in the country.

Recently, research firm Counterpoint Research revealed that iPhone sales in China had climbed 8% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025. This increase was due to the significant promotions on the iPhone 16 applied by Apple in May in the Middle Kingdom . Will the Cupertino company see this good trend reverse at the end of the year due to the inability of Chinese users to use the iPhone 17 Air properly?

As a reminder, the iPhone 17 Air would be 6.25 mm thick , making it the thinnest smartphone ever released by the Apple brand. The device would be equipped with a 6.6-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate thanks to ProMotion. An unknown quantity remains around the selling price of the iPhone 17 Air.
